JUNE,  2009   Volume 34, Issue 6

President’s Corner:

 Hello Quilters,

Anne has a speaker for June, Patsy Hartz (Good work Anne!!)  I understand she makes quilts for commercial buildings.  This program will be something different than we've had before.  LARGE  quilts - so it will be a slide show, rather than a trunk show.

Also note that Anne has scheduled a workshop with Kay Nickols on Saturday,  August 22 at the Senior Center.  Sign up with  Anne Wohifiel (see flyer.)

Please check with Penny Schaale about helping her with displaying the raffle quilt.

July is our "4 corners" and Pot Luck, the guild will provide the hot dogs, buns and condiments.

Mark your calendar for October 3rd.  Another of Mary Seymore’s quilt retreats at the Senior Center, 9am to 9pm.

Don't forget your "Blotto" squares for June.

See you on June 24.

Bonnie Keen, President

June Speaker:  Patsy Hartz

Patsy Hartz is an art quilter from Oxford MI who creates quilts for public spaces.  She will be presenting a slide show on the "quilt" she made for the Ypsilanti District Library - it is actually composed of 9 quilts created using many techniques (paper piecing, fabric painting, etc) to create a section of Mariner's Compass which has a radius of 24 feet.  Some members may remember Patsy as a former member and vice president of our guild.

Raffle Ticket Ideas

By Anne Wolfield

Raffle tickets can make a nice gift or brighten someone's day.  Go to our guild's website and print a color picture of our raffle quilt.  Enclose it along with a couple of raffle tickets in a birthday card to a co-worker, a mother's day card, a thank you card, or in a letter to an out of town friend.  It doesn't cost a lot, but shows you are thinking of them and it is something different.

Contact Penny Schaale  for 2009 Raffle Quilt Tickets.  The board also wants to remind you there are great prizes to be won… One prize  for the guild member who sells the most tickets and another prize for the winning ticket.  Be sure to put your name on the back of the tickets you sell.

A note sent in by  Dayna Hughes:

I ran across this page and thought all of my quilting friends would appreciate it. Just print out the page on a full sheet of labels and cut out the booktags. I'm always looking for a way to mark my books when I loan them out - what a great idea!

Safe House Update:
Joyce Wiltfong

http://www.orgsites.com/mi/esq/_pgg3.php3

Hello, I am sorry I did not get to you last month before the newsletter went out to share about the quilt donation to Safe-House. When I dropped the quilts off the lady who came out to help take the items inside was very please with them and said they really can use them. There are always very nice and enjoy all the items we donate to Safe-House. The total for the April Safe-House quilt donation was 14.  The lady said they where very pretty plus they are always put to good use. Thank you to the quilters who donated.

This is the list of the items needed by Safe House in the coming months.

JUNE:  Diapers

JULY:  Personal Hygiene (deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, etc) anything to help them feel better

AUGUST:  Children Clothing (socks, underwear, etc)

Blotto:

Lee Collins

Blotto Blocks are due this month.  For each block you submit you have a chance to win a collection of blocks.  ( Three collections are usually drawn)  Wouldn’t it be fun to have quilt made of quilts made by your fellow quilters.

Lee wanted to stress the importance of having the gold star in the upper left hand corner.  Be sure to keep the red and white stripe horizontal on the blocks.  I wish to apologize if my drawing in the newsletter confused anyone.  The photograph of the blocks and the pattern itself were correct.

Charm Squares :

Interview with Patsy Hartz.  June 8, 2009

I was able to interview Patsy just after she arrived home from a trip up North with her husband.  She attended Adrian College and later got a Masters Degree in English from Oakland.  Patsy is married and has two grown children.  Recently she has been working as an office manager.

Patsy stated she has been sewing since the age of 14 but did not start quilting until 1985.   She initially made traditional quilts but as she honed her skills she became interested in contemporary art quilting.   The numerous art classes and workshops she has taken has helped her hone her skills and sparked her creativity.   She was a student of Nancy Crow and took many of the classes offered though the Quilt Surface Design Symposiums in Columbus Ohio.

http://qsds.com/mainsite.php

Patsy was a member of the Davison Evening Star Quilt guild in the 90s.  She belonged to several sit and stitch groups at that time.  She said she learned applique from Audrey Derscha, took classes from Ami Simms and attended as may of the workshops she could.   Making some of the mystery quilts pattern offered and the skills she learned from the 4 corner sessions that guild hosted is what she liked the most.   Patsy said at one time she served as program director for the guild and booked many of the speakers and workshops.

What she remembers most from the time she was a member of Evening Stars was the friends she made.  She started knowing one or two ladies but became friends with a large number of the quilters.   Patsy still belongs to two sit and stitch group but is not currently a member of any organized guild.

Patsy has quilts displayed in the Oxford Public Library,  Ann Arbor Hospice,  McClearn Hospital.  She will be discussing the quilt she made for the Ypsilanti District Library as a commissioned piece in 2001.

I asked Patsy my favorite question,  “ How do you deal with quilter’s block.”  She said she knows of two ways,  “Go to the studio and make something every day.”  But what works better for her was to do something unrelated, to look at other forms of art.  Quilters often get their initial inspiration from other quilts, but as you progress in your knowledge and skills your inspiration comes from other art forms and the natural world.

I was curious how a quilter could make such a large project so I  asked Patsy, “How do you organizes your work.”   First she said you should have a solid skill level.  She took a lot of art, quilting classes and workshops to improve her skills.    She said for most of her projects she starts by making a scrap guide of all the fabrics she is going to use so she can plan out the various locations the fabric will be in the project.  Patsy often makes a color mock up of the work, this helps her to conceptualize the project but it is also usually requested by whoever commissions the piece.  She makes lots of list of all the steps she will take to accomplish the work.  Although she follows the basic rules of quilting some changes are made due to the sizes of some of her works.   Patsy said she would discuss this more when she gives her lecture.

Favorite tools:  Fabric, fabric and more fabric.  She use to dye and paint  (Nas-Dar textile inks)  much of her fabric in her earlier works but due to time restraints she currently works with batiks.  She likes the luminance of the batiks fabrics as they are closest to stain glass a quilter can get.   Patsy says she plans to discuss more of her process during her lecture.

As soon as I hung up the phone I was thinking of other questions to ask Patsy about her project and process.  I know you will have tons of questions too.  I have included links to the Ypsilanti District Library, where you can see a small picture of the work.    I can hardly wait till our June meeting.
