President’s Corner: Hello Ladies, Summer is here with a vengeance. I have to say I liked it better when it was cooler. Oh well, August is here. Our August speaker is Beth Ferrier, I am sure we will all enjoy hearing about her. I hope everyone got to see last months, Round Robin Quilts. They were all great. The Four Corner instructors Anne, Ginny and Charlie were very informative. Thank you all very much for stepping up and sharing your knowledge. The cooks last month outdid themselves! It is a good thing we do not eat like that every month. Thank YOU everyone for what you did to help out. See you at the meeting. Bonnie Keen

From Anne Wohlfiel Safe-house
Donations: A big Thank-you to everyone for their donations and a gentle
reminder that all donations must be new items. If you have gently used
items you want to donate , or new items that have been sitting around
until they are past their prime, please talk to Joyce Wiltfong. She can
give you alternative outlets for these items. We need volunteers for the Flint Festival of Quilts on Sept 10, 11, 12 from 9-5 at the Berrington and Tinlin Houses. Are any groups willing to "Adopt a Day"? A group of friends, a sewing group? We are looking for groups to volunteer to take a whole day from 9-5. You would need probably 5 people there most of the time, 2 at Tinlin and 3 at the Berrington. You would answer questions about the quilts, about our guild, and sell raffle tickets. Five people would allow for bathroom and lunch breaks. We also have been asked to do a 1-hour demonstration each afternoon. (Exact time to be determined.) This demo can be as simple as doing some hand applique or hand quilting, or something along the lines of a 4-corners idea. It could be a fun day. To volunteer, call Anne Wohlfiel (810)239-8788.

Chinese Auction at the September 30th Meeting
Ladies, Remember to be looking around your sewing rooms for those unused, unneeded, not going to use again, or ever, items. Our auction ( September 30th meeting) is closing in on us, and I can use those things that you are no longer going to use or want store. Those magazines that you thought you might want to reread, and that yardage that was leftover from a quilt that you made, or that you thought you would make one day! These are things that I can put in our auction. Be sure to start saving a few extra dollars too! You never know you just might find something that you can’t live without or be able to use in your next project!!! We already have some very nice things that have been donated. Just be sure that what ever you donate is in good condition and clean. This should be a very fun evening; Anne has some special things planned to go along with it.
Please call to make arrangements for me to get the items. Shelley Poole … 810- 412-6603

INVITATION to display quilts in the Flint FESTIVAL OF QUILTS
The Evening Star Quilt Guild will be showing quilts at The Barrington House on the west corner of Second Ave and Garland St. in Flint for the Festival of Quilts. We will have the two front store spaces, which will accommodate our quilt racks. We will be able to show around 50 quilts. The show is September 10th, 11th and 12th from 9 to 5. We also need some small items to put on shelves in the Tinlin House which is next to the Barrington. We will be able to sell raffle tickets for our raffle quilt and the coordinator of Court Street Village will be adding an incentive to bring people to our location. I will need quilts brought to the Aug. mtg. or dropped off at my house by Sept. 4. This will give me time to type description cards. If you would like to sell your quilt, I need to know, so I can add this to the card. We will need volunteers to sign up for set-up of the racks and quilts along with tear-down on Wednesday, Sept. 9. Ann Wohlfiel will be head over signing up people to watch over quilts and quilt items, along with people that can do demos for the three days. Penny Schaale will be responsible for getting people to sell raffle tickets. This is great exposure for our guild.
Contact Judy Andrwoski (810-653-2342) if you would like to display a quilt in a historical house during the Flint Quilt Festival. Please contact Penny Schaale 810- 686-1207 is you are willing to help with displaying the Raffle quilt.

Beth Ferrier of Applewood Farms
Pieces of a Quilter’s Life
July 22, 2009
I had a delightful interview with the August speaker, Beth Ferrier of Applewood Farms Publications and Quilt Studio. Beth is the author and self - publisher of many books and patterns, Hand Applique by Machine (2002.) being her most notable. (These will be available for purchase at the August meeting.) Beth made her first quilt in 1975, piecing and quilting it by hand. She made her second quilt in 1985, this time she machine quilted. She has been quilting ever since. She started her teaching career in the Saginaw area in 1989. She has taught in thirty-one states, in Europe and Australia.
When asked what was the inspiration behind her quilting style, Beth stated, “I get a my ideas for my patterns and designs from nature and my flower garden.” She laughing said she has not found a fabric she did not like, but, her color choices come from nature. Beth also said, “ She considers Diane Gaudynski (http://www.dianegaudynski.net ) and Caryl Bryer Fallert (http://www.bryerpatch.com ) as mentors and inspiration in her quilting style. Not because her quilts are similar to theirs but because they gave her the inspiration and techniques to use in her own quilt creations. In her own work, she has applied many of the methods, techniques and skills she learned from them. “Diane opened my eyes to what FREE MOTION could do for my quilts and Caryl’s philosophy and color usage freed the color selection in my work. They inspired me to follow my own dreams. “
Beth went on to say, “ I consider myself a rebellious traditionalist. I take a traditional design or pattern and then quilt it in a contemporary fashion.” My focus is on the design elements. She feels quilts should be touchable. My projects and books are design to teach techniques that can be applied to other projects of your own design.” Beth said she usually makes one large quilt a year and 10 to 12 smaller projects wall hanging or lap size for her classes, books and publications.
Beth is currently working on “ SNEAKY” PIECING TECHNIQUES book. These are strategies and techniques she has created, which result in precision piecing but are easy to accomplish. Many of these techniques have been previously explained in some of her patterns but this book is compilation of all her techniques. Her previous books were self published. This will be her first book published by C&T Publishing. The book’s planned release will be this fall (October or November.) The Davison Evening Star Quilt Guild will be the first guild in Michigan to see the quilts samples from this book.
