Note from the Editor: Please
note I have changed the format of the newsletter for this issue
as I am trying to find an easier format for those members who
are unable to open a WORD file. This format will also be
used in the archives pages. I am trying to use a smaller
format because many of our members have older computer monitors
that can not view the newsletter without scrolling. Please
bare with me while I find a format everyone can view easily.
I am pretty sure you can copy and paste by highlighting the
information you want into a ( any)word processing - document
file on your computer and then print out any information you
want.

President Letter
by Bonnie Keen
Hello, Today (3/6/09)
it looks like spring is here. I hope that is true. I am sorry
I was unable to attend the February meeting. I hope everyone
had a good time and you are working on a quilt for SafeHouse (
twin size is desired.) I think we have seven tops ready for
finishing touches. Anyone interested in making more quilts for
SafeHouse you can get a kit from Mary Seymore or Sharon
Baxendale at New Home in Mt Morris. Our Speaker for March is
Joan De Rue should be interesting. The Underground Railroad and
how quilts played a part are an interesting part of our nations
past. I am looking forward to Joan’s lecture.
There have been changes in the up coming Guild lecture
schedule. In April we will have a trunk show from Sue DeWitt.
May’s speaker will be Kay Nichols, she is bringing three trunks
full of quilt for display. In June we will learn how to thread
paint with Eve Agee. The Chinese auction will be delayed until
September. Wanda Warbly’s trunk show will be later in the year.
The membership directory is going to be finished this month.
Please stop at the membership table and pick up your directory
and membership card. At this time we have 96 members.

Goals of the Newsletter:
I
started doing the newsletter in January of this year. I thought
I should state the goals I have set for the newsletter as I have
been asked about them several times. I am going to continue
trying to get the newsletter published and printed a week after
the Officer Board Meeting which is the Wednesday after our guild
meeting. The meeting is held at New Home Sewing Center in Mt
Morris and is open to any guild member (2pm.) I start working
on the articles as soon as I start getting information from the
board / committee members and the various contributors. If you
have information you want published please have the article sent
to me by the weekend after the board meeting. That is usually
when I do my final draft. I am hoping to include all type of
quilting information and announcements but that will depend upon
space and the amount of guild information that must be posted.
Quilt show posting will be posted before the dates being
held. I will be limiting the size of the newsletter to 4-5
double back pages ( similar to previous publications.)
I am
enjoying editing this newsletter because I have been in contact
with so many interesting quilters. Information about Michigan
quilt shows and events are sent to me all the time by other
guilds. I am hoping to pass on this great information to you
in the various formats. That said, I will hope you will bare
with me as I am trying to learn how to use several software
programs.
I try
to have the printed newsletter to Yvonne Stevenson who continues
to get the newsletter printed at the printers, then mailed out.
If it was not for HER work I would not be able to do this job
because my work schedule conflicts when the print shop is open
and my Saturdays are tied up with various classes and family
events. I want to extend my thanks to her because she has
graciously guided me through this entire process.
My goal
is to have the emails mailed out, the archive posted and to
deliver the print pages to Yvonne by the Wednesday after the
board meeting. I hope to have everyone a copy of the newsletter
by the 15th of every month.
Contact
me, (810-667-3504 or email: (davisoneveningstarquiltguild@gmail.com
)
, if you are not getting your newsletter by the 17th.
Extra copies will always be available at the main desk.
I have
found that MS Word documents can be opened by the majority of
our members in the email version. Your ability to read the
documents depends upon your computer, monitor settings and your
Internet / email service. There are a few members who have
publishing software program other then MS-Word. I am planning
to email a copy and paste document to them. The newsletter may
look different and print out differently then the original
files, but it will have the same information. I found email for
some reason increases the number of pages that print out. Every
email (yahoo, g mail, outlook express) service has their own way
of printing out the emails so that greatly impacts the printing
of the newsletter.
If you
go to the archives the newsletter prints out almost identical to
original newsletter. I do upgrade information in the archives
as it comes to me. I am hoping this will get the newsletter in
everyone’s hands in a timely manner.
Thank
you,
Anna
Palmer

Book and DVD Reviews:
(email and on line only)
by Anna
Palmer
On the ongoing endeavor
to finish my UFOs for the Guild’s UFO challenge I am once again
looking at my books and DVD shelves to find books that will
give me ideas on how to accomplish this task. Recently I have
re-read and used ideas from APPLIQUE
BASICS AND BEYOND by Janet Pittman.
I am part of the quilting
group at Elaine’s Quilty Shop and we are currently making the
blocks for a quilt designed by Carolyn Mackness (also a Davison
Guild member.) One of my blocks highlighted machine applique
and thread painting. The book APPLIQUE
BASICS AND BEYOND gives wonderful
easy to follow instruction in the basics of both hand and
machine applique work but then it goes beyond and shows
techniques to make each block special. The book included
directions and patterns for 6 great quick home dec floral
projects that act as lessons and practice pieces. All the
techniques shown could be applied to larger quilt projects.
FAST and FREE volumes 0.5 and
volume 2.0
by Patsy
Thompson
I am still trying to
practice and learn MACHINE QUILTING techniques to use in
quilting my smaller and utility projects. I recently viewed the
DVD FAST and FREE volumes 0.5 and
volume 2.0 by Patsy Thompson.
(Volume 0.5 is an improved version of her volume one.)
These DVDs are geared toward the beginning machine quilter,
using a domestic machine. It shows how to get your quilt
ready for quilting and how to set up your machine and reasons
for adjusting your tension. The DVD shows how to practice
and work through various machine quilting styles. If you
work through all the patterns Patsy shows as you view the DVD,
pattern by pattern, your quilting should be progress and become
easy by
the end of the two DVDs. Patsy has a number of other DVDs that
teach more advance quilting patterns in detail such as feathers,
leaves and vines etc. I will be honest in that I thought the
quilting content of the DVD was good and I AM learning a lot
from the DVD. I was disappointed in the production values of
the DVD. The DVDs seems very amateurish, more like a YOU TUBE
presentation. But then maybe I am jaded in my tastes as I am
use to Fons and Porter and the Quilt Show DVDs.

Beginning Thread Painting
Workshop With Eve Agee
JUNE 23,, 2009 $35.00 9:30
TO 4 PM at Linda’s Quilt Shop in Davison
We will be
having a 6 hour workshop on BEGINNING THREAD PAINTING at
Linda’s Quilt Shop in Davison on Tuesday June 23rd
from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm. The instructor will be Eve Agee, an
award winning quilter and Bernina Educator from North Carolina.
Eve is a designer, author, and teacher. She has been teaching
free motion embroidery and thread painting since 1977. Eve
will be the guest speaker at our Guild meeting on June 24th.
This
workshop will introduce students to two basic thread painting
techniques- zig-zag and straight stitches. Students will learn
about needles, thread, hoops, stabilizers, machine set up and
movements to achieve shading and dimension in designs. A small
design will be done in class.
The fee is
$35.00 which includes a kit to complete your project. A supply
list will be given to you when you pay your fee. You will need
a wooden 7 inch machine embroidery hoop ( non squeeze.) We will
be ordering hoops for who ever needs one. Check the box on the
application form. You will pay for the hoops at Linda’s the day
of the workshop.
This is a
great opportunity to try thread painting! There will be
pictures of Eve’s work to view at the meeting or you can go to
her web site.
http://www.evelynagee.com Eve says that you do not need a
fancy machine to thread paint. Use a Singer Featherweight or
1967 Kenmore will do.
Hope to see
you there!

DVD Survey:
The board was
approached about purchasing QUILTING DVD for the LIBRARY to allow members to check them out and view them. As you
may realize there is less and less TV QUILTING SHOWS on PBS and
TV in general. Most of the quilting teachers have gone to on
line, pay to view quilting instruction format. ( ie The Quilt
Show with Ricky Timms and Alex Anderson, Fons and Porter,
QuiltNews Network TV, even Kay Woods and Eleanor Burns etc.
) It was felt that this would be a good teaching tool for
newbie and advance quilters alike. The details are still being
worked out among the board and the librarians before this
program would be implemented. But, we need your input. Please
fill out the following survey and hand it in at the main desk at
the March 2009 meeting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- How
often do you use the library? How often do you check out
the books?
- Would you borrow / rent a quilting DVD? Yes NO
__________
- Would you be willing to pay a small rental fee? ( Fee to
support guild library and purchase of more DVDs? )
- Would you be willing to pay reimbursement costs if you lost,
ruined the DVD?
- Do
you think this would be a good _________ / bad _______
idea for the guild.
Additional survey question:
The guild
board has been faced in the past with trying to organize a
presentation at the last moment when the speaker has cancelled
or been a NO show. The guild board was wondering if the members
would be willing to view DVDs as a group or in modular
stations. (Feasibilities is being investigated and discusses by
the board members.) This type of substitution will only be
used in an emergency if the board is unable to organize
If DVD
programs would not be desired:
What type
of program would you like to see or do ?
How would
you be able to help with the change in program?
Response
on the back of this survey please.
Use this
form ( Put additional comments on the back of the form. ) or
hand in a separate sheet of paper answering the above questions.
For email newsletter recipients, PLEASE, print off a copy of
the form and turn it in at the March meeting. (Print off this
page only by changing your selection to CURRENT PAGE on the
print screen.) ONLY those people who will not attend the
meeting but still want to respond to the survey can email me at
:
Note from the Editor:
I have been experimenting in
various format as it has recently come to my attention that what
a person views on a web page differs depending upon what type of
internet browser and what type of monitor you are viewing
the web page/ email on. Internet browsers read and display
the same web page code differently so what is seen on one
computer will be viewed differently on another.
I am choosing the simplest format
I can so that the information is easy to read regardless what
monitor setting you are reading. In the archives I use a
larger font style and size to try and make the viewing
experience easier on the eyes... AFTER ALL, We want to
save our eyes for quilting.
Please let me know if any of you
have problems viewing this or any other web page in the
archives.
